Icons Re/Outfitted

The Visionary Lab invited designers and artists to breathe new life into pre-used Vitra chairs with repurposed denim from Levi’s®.

Icons Re/Outfitted is an artistic project initiated and curated by creative studio The Visionary Lab, and designed to merge design, fashion and storytelling, while bringing attention to the issue of textile-waste. The artfully re-outfitted chairs from Vitra - including chairs by Charles & Ray Eames, Verner Panton, and George Nelson - explore a rich tapestry of innovative techniques, varying from digital 3D weaving and the development of new biotextiles, to the transformation of end-of-life Levi’s® denim into luxurious felt.

Sarmite was commissioned to developed two objects:

Panton Chair Re/Outfitted

Inspired by wrapping stored away art objects, Studio Sarmite covers a discarded Panton chair with her mesmerising (un)woven biotextile. Made of Levi’s denim waste, the sturdy but lightweight material is carefully sculpted over the chair and beyond it, creating an extension of itself into a carpet. The designer plays with a sense of mystery and rediscovery through colours, patterns and shapes while also paying tribute to the iconic chair.

Recycled Denim space dividers

Sarmite extracted and recycled Levi's® denim dye from discarded denim fibres. The recycled dye was further mixed with natural polymers and denim yarns forming translucent and fully recyclable sheets. The result is a unique material that serves as a remarkable innovation in the form of space dividers, adding a sustainable and artistic touch to interior design.
